9th Energies Webinar

Advanced Thermodynamics, Type-B Energetic Processes and Their Applications II

As the organizer and Chair, Prof. James Weifu Lee welcomes you all to attend this 2022 MDPI Energies Webinar Seminar Series program on Advanced Thermodynamics, Type-B Energetic Processes and Their Applications. This topic area recently has seen some exciting new breakthroughs that are potentially transformative to the sciences, technologies, and education of Energies, including the recent breakthrough identification of two thermodynamically distinct types (A and B) of energetic processes naturally occurring on Earth. Type A energetic process such as the classical heat engines apparently well follow the second law of thermodynamics; Type B energetic process, such as the newly discovered thermotrophic function that isothermally utilizes environmental heat energy to do useful work in driving ATP synthesis, which follows the first law of thermodynamics (conservation of mass and energy), but do not have to be constrained by the second law, owning to their special asymmetric functions. Better understanding of Type-B energy processes is particularly of great scientific and practical importance. Innovative scientific research and development efforts in mimicking and/or creating of Type-B processes to isothermally utilize the endless environmental heat energy shall be highly encouraged to help ultimately liberate all peoples from their dependence of fossil fuel energy, thus helping to reduce greenhouse gas CO2 emissions and control climate change towards a common shared sustainable future for the humanity on Earth.

Introduction
Bio
Prof. James Weifu Lee completed PhD thesis research at Cornell University in 1992 and then worked as a Scientist at US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory for 15 years. His energy research received national recognition including the 1999–2004 U.S. Presidential Award honored at the White House. Subsequently, he worked as a professor at Old Dominion University in Virginia and has been recognized as a world-class scientist among the recent Stanford University World ranking of scientists, which represents the top 2% of the most-cited scientists in the world. He recently identified two thermodynamically distinct types (A, B) of energetic processes naturally occurring on Earth. Type-A energetic process such as the heat engine process follows well the thermodynamic second law; Type-B energetic process, represented by the newly discovered thermotrophic function, does not have to be constrained by the second law, owing to the asymmetric function. The identification of Type-B energetic process is of great scientific and practical importance.

Introduction
Bio
Daniel P. Sheehan is a Professor of Physics at the University of San Diego, where he has taught since 1989. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Santa Clara University in 1981 (magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa), and his Ph.D. in Physics from University of California, Irvine in 1987, with thesis work in experimental plasma physics investigating the phase space development of elementary plasma processes. His research interests include negative ion plasmas, planetary formation, Casimir effect, the physics of time, the phenomenon of consciousness, and the foundations of thermodynamics, specifically the limits to the second law.
